Why does my lawn tractor leak gas into the oil when it runs or sits?

While you remove the carburetor bowl to inspect/clean the needle and seat like the previous person suggested, I would shake the float to make darn sure that there was no gas in it. As the float gets old, the solder joints where they joined the bowl together can and will start leaking. If there is gas in it, it will always allow gas to leak into the carb. Good luck...P.S. most of the time, you can replace the bowl and needle for under 20 bucks. Why does my lawn tractor leak gas into the oil when it runs or sits?
If the gas tank is higher than the carburetor the carb. will have a float valve to stop fuel flow when its Bowl is full. If the float valve '; Needle '; is worn or sticking the gas will over fill the bowl and run into the cylinder when the intake valve is open. This Flooding of gas will leak around the piston rings and into the crank case!

Car smoking from hood, smells bad, burning oil...Does it sound like a rear oil seal leak?

Car smoking from hood, smells bad, burning oil...Does it sound like a rear oil seal leak? That's what one guys told me but haven't got a second opinion yet. They said it'd cost me about 1 grand to fix because they need to take either the transmission or engine out to put a new seal on. Does this sound like it could be that or something else and cheaper? It's a 98 Nissan Maxima.Car smoking from hood, smells bad, burning oil...Does it sound like a rear oil seal leak?
If it's smoking and smelling then oil is getting onto very hot engine parts such as the exhaust, so have a look. Valve cover leaks can run down and look like a rear main seal and this is easily fixed.

If the engine is really dirty have it expertly cleaned and you will be able to see the source of the leak far better after running the engine for a short time.

As for a rear main seal, it's true that you have to separate the engine and transmission and in the case of a manual, remove the clutch and flywheel and the drive plate in the case of an auto trans. Not an easy or cheap job.Car smoking from hood, smells bad, burning oil...Does it sound like a rear oil seal leak?
no i doubt it, its most likely the valve cover gasket, nissans are notorious for this problem, i have a 97 nissan pathfinder and it had the cover gaskets replaced because they fail commonly on nissans, also i had a rear main seal leak and i had none of the symptoms you are describing
Could be a rear oil seal, but I would have a technician check to see where the leak is coming from. I'm not sure if you have a transverse or in-line engine, but if it is transverse, an oil seal leak will probably not cause the smoking from the hood.
It doesn't really sound like a main seal, those leaks usually just drip on the ground. Valve cover leaks tend to run over the exhaust manifold and make smoke. Get it checked out then decide what to do.
It could be a valve cover gasket. If i is the rear mail seal you should have oil all under the car. Mabey oil spot on the ground where you park your car.
have it checked by a mechanic could be a hundred different things as easy as a value cover gasket have it checked before jumping to conclusions
It could be a rear seal, but one thing is for sure, oil is dripping on your exhaust. Let it cool and you should be able to find the source of the leak.

Good luck!

  • Last night my car suddenly started leaking muddy oil. The temp gauge rose. Is this a bad head gasket?

all this happened in about 20 seconds. Thank you.Last night my car suddenly started leaking muddy oil. The temp gauge rose. Is this a bad head gasket?
YOU BLEW THE OIL SENDING SWITCH, OR SENSOR, DEPENDING ON THE YEAR OF THE CAR. dON'T DRIVE THAT CHARIOT, THAT LEAKING OIL COULD START A FIRE ON THE EXHAUST PIPES. hAVE IT TOED TO A REPAIR SHOP, AND HAVE THE OIL SENDING SWITCH REPLACED.Last night my car suddenly started leaking muddy oil. The temp gauge rose. Is this a bad head gasket?
Well the ';muddy oil'; was rusty water from poorly maintained cooling system! If you did not continue running even though hot, it may have no damage to engine. After all it could be a leaky hose, bad waterpump, damaged radiator, and a few more uncommon things!

However if you continued to drive, even though the problem may not have started in engine,-- continueing could blow head gasket, or even worse destroy engine, -- if you continue long enough! Engines just don't last long without water in them!
It is either a bad headgasket, cracked cylinder head or cracked block.....get it fixed ASAP, running it with coolant in the oil(muddy oil) will damage the main and rod bearings quickly and cost you a super fortune or even your car if its not worth fixing......
Where is the leak coming from?.. Check your coolant level, and engine oil level.. Also check that your engine oil doesn;t look milky on the dipstick.. It does sound like your engines **** itself.. but its hard to tell from your description... Make sure all your engine belts are in place aswell..
well i dont think so because it happen in 20 seconds...if it was bad it would took like at least 1 minute or probably 53 seconds or sometimes 1 minute so i think its not that bad but you should still be AWARE
Sounds like either a blown head gasket or a cracked/Warped head allowing oil to escape into the cooling system
Yep it sure is.Or a cracked head or block
sounds like your engine blew... better get that checked ASAP!!

1997 Honda Prelude oil burn or leak ?

    hi , i drive a 1997 honda prelude 2.2 lt DOHC VETC.

i have noticed that the oil level is going down and down . i was told to check the rear bumber to see it is wet with oil .. but no oil is on the rear end ... the ground is dry ! where is the oil going ?

how can i fix it ?

and advice from experts will be great . thankyou for your time and help1997 Honda Prelude oil burn or leak ?
could be bad/burnt piston rings. do you drive it hard? of course getting burnt up and then out the exhaust system? ever see any black smoke from the exhaust when you run it hard? if so, then its your piston rings. it needs to be changed if you mind adding a qt of oil every month or so and i tell ya it aint cheap and easy unless you do it yourself and you know how to do it. good luck

Could my thermostat have failed and caused oil to leak into the radiator, but not ruined the head gasket?

I brought my 1989 honda wagon into the shop to get a tune up and oil change,it was past due and the car was running rough. They talked me into getting a radiator flush, new top radiator hose, fuel injection service, etc. A total bill of 400!

When leaving the shop the owner said ';you car not start'; I said huh? ';you car die'; (he didnt speak much English) ';you car die tomorrow it not my fault';-WHAT

I asked him to explain and he said my car was old and could die anytime, I was suspicious and hounded him for a reason it would die he clammed up.

Fast forward a week my car overheats and spews water and a little oil.

I have checked for all the signs of a cracked head gasket but all the pieces do not fit.

There is oil in the reserve tank of the radiator, drops on the rad cap.

There is NO water in the oil.

    There is NO white smoke.

There are NO bubbles in the coolant when running the car .

The fan is not kicking in.

    The car Is overheating.

The engine is running well .

Any ideas?Could my thermostat have failed and caused oil to leak into the radiator, but not ruined the head gasket?
First thing is the fan not running. This however could be caused by a bad thermostat. If the sensor that tells the fan to run is not receiving hot water the fan won't turn on. This happens if the sensor is on the radiator or on the output side of the system. It can also happen if the sensor is in a pocket, without water flow the pocket may remain full of air.

I would say the thermostat may be bad. If you aren't getting white smoke and don't find any oil in the water or vice-versa my first guess is the head gasket is fine. Now, overheats can cause the head gasket to fail so don't let this go on and don't let it get too hot.

Apparently the car starts and runs now...you didn't say how that happened.

Take the radiator cap off, run the engine, when it gets hot the thermostat should be open and you should be able to see flow through the radiator.

Take the thermostat out, see if the car overheats. Or, test the thermostat in a pot of boiling water. It had better open by the time the water reaches boiling temp.

If you have flow, and thermostat works, look at the fan. It's probably a sensor, relay, or fuse.

Today i just noticed oil leaking from my car, What could be wrong?

First you need to know if it is engine oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid or antifreeze.Today i just noticed oil leaking from my car, What could be wrong?
most of the time it is the front seal or rear seal, this is not an easy thing to replace especially on a front wheel drive

added: also could be a valve cover gasket but 90% of the time front seal goes then the rearToday i just noticed oil leaking from my car, What could be wrong?
Oil leak could sprang from various places. From the oil filter seal, oil pan screw washer (screw you remove to drain oil), oil pan gasket, cylinder gasket, valve gasket, etc). If you have a clean engine you should probably be able to see where it's leaking. Another way to find out would be to look from the bottom from where the oil is dripping and trace the source upward. But if you have a dirty oil smudged engine you might have to get your engine clean (yourself or professionally) then just check the engine after you drive to see where the leak is coming from. Some people who does the engine steam cleaning will also do a pressure check for you to see where the leak is coming from... approx cost around $100-150.for cleaning and checking.
youve obviously got a leak, the problem is where. you may need to get it on a ramp and have a gud look underneath if it isnt blatently obvious lookin under the bonnet.also keep your eye on the dipstick and keep the oil level topped up as an engine with no oil will get poorly very quickly.
    Hiya

It will be a seal or gasket of some sort, that is letting the oil escape.

Best to check the oil level on the dipstick, see how much oil is in the engine, fill it up with more oil till it is on maximum level and then drive it to a local garage to get it fixed.

This way you won't damage the engine by running it on little or no oil.

Candidly there are several places oil could leak out, so it does need someone who is knowledgeable about cars to help you - and that's usually a reputable garage.

    Hope this helps
First you would need to find out where it is leaking from, you can go to your local auto parts supplier and get some cheap spray degreaser and spray it on then wash it with the water house. If you e-mail me after you figure that out I would be more than happy to give you further advise. My e-mail (incase it doesn't show it) is Jays2112@yahoo.com.
Congradulations .... you have an oil leak. First of all - find out where it's coming from. Park the car and immediately put an array of large paper (newspaper is fine) under the engine overnight. In the morning, remove the paper carefully and find the one with the oil drips directly over it is the leak. It could be as simple as an oil filter that is not tight enough, or as nasty as a cracked oil pan. If it is coming from the oil filter, just get the oil and filter changed as usual.. Otherwise, if you ain't joe mechanic, show your mechanic exactly where you found the drip - that should save a few hundred bucks for diagnosis.
faulty oil seal or loose oil filter, get it checked

There are many reasons for oil leakage from a vehicle such as worn or bad gaskets to loose oil pan plug or oil filters. The cause is usually determined by tracing the leak to it's source. If you or someone you know and knows what they're doing can't do this it would be wise to take your car in for servicing as once a leak starts they only get worse if not fixed. Good Luck!!!
Have your gasket replaced, and make sure your drain bolt is on tight.
It could be comming from either engine, gearbox and if ur car is rear wheel drive, rear axle.

Does oil leak onto ur drive or garage floor? if yes then it could be any of the three, Its easy to know where oil is from if u put ur car in garage because u will know by where the oil is in relation to the car, up front engine, and or gearbox if transverse engine / gearbox, slightly behind location of engine will be the gearbox and at the back of car will be rear axle. If its the engine, it may just want the sump screws tightened, sump could be damaged, sump drain plug seal either missing or not tight enough, if leak is bad then its the sump or sump plug washer missing as the oil sinks to bottom of engine / sump so it cannot be above the level of oil in the engine, u could also poss have front or rear crankshaft oil seal gone but only if low amount of oil overnight. Engine oil after a few miles turns blackish and if u smell it u will smell petrol / smoky smell from it Just remembered, it could also be front casing gasket..

Gearbox oil is lighter, but the smell is different i cannot explain the smell, but the oil should be clearer than engine

Oil can leak from gaskets on casing, front and rear oil seals, drain plug could be loose, but highly unlikely.

Rear axle, more likely to be lose backplate, just tighten up bolts, it has a oil seal as well but I dont think it is at fault.

No disrespect meant to the guys who mentioned Rocker gasket, head gasket, oil will only leak out from these when engine is running, when car is in garage and engine switched off the oil slowly drains back down into the sump, so as I said, if it is the engine that is leaking, then the oil cannot leak from any higher than the oil level when engine stopped.

There are some exceptions though, slanted or engines on their sides, then yes it could be anything from sump up to rocker gasket, VW beetles have these type of engines.
did you recently have an oil change? If yes, possibly they didn't tighten the oil pan plug, or oil filter on a little cockeyed. If these two can be eliminated, valve cover or oil pan gasket.
numerous reasons some minor some more serious -gearbox oil seal, drive shaft seals in differential, sump gasket leaking, rocker box gasket, crankshaft oil seal, cylinder head gasket etc.most older cars loose some oil at various points of minor significance.if the oil leak is heavy get it looked at
