Why does my lawn tractor leak gas into the oil when it runs or sits?

While you remove the carburetor bowl to inspect/clean the needle and seat like the previous person suggested, I would shake the float to make darn sure that there was no gas in it. As the float gets old, the solder joints where they joined the bowl together can and will start leaking. If there is gas in it, it will always allow gas to leak into the carb. Good luck...P.S. most of the time, you can replace the bowl and needle for under 20 bucks. Why does my lawn tractor leak gas into the oil when it runs or sits?
If the gas tank is higher than the carburetor the carb. will have a float valve to stop fuel flow when its Bowl is full. If the float valve '; Needle '; is worn or sticking the gas will over fill the bowl and run into the cylinder when the intake valve is open. This Flooding of gas will leak around the piston rings and into the crank case!

Car smoking from hood, smells bad, burning oil...Does it sound like a rear oil seal leak?

Car smoking from hood, smells bad, burning oil...Does it sound like a rear oil seal leak? That's what one guys told me but haven't got a second opinion yet. They said it'd cost me about 1 grand to fix because they need to take either the transmission or engine out to put a new seal on. Does this sound like it could be that or something else and cheaper? It's a 98 Nissan Maxima.Car smoking from hood, smells bad, burning oil...Does it sound like a rear oil seal leak?
If it's smoking and smelling then oil is getting onto very hot engine parts such as the exhaust, so have a look. Valve cover leaks can run down and look like a rear main seal and this is easily fixed.

If the engine is really dirty have it expertly cleaned and you will be able to see the source of the leak far better after running the engine for a short time.

As for a rear main seal, it's true that you have to separate the engine and transmission and in the case of a manual, remove the clutch and flywheel and the drive plate in the case of an auto trans. Not an easy or cheap job.Car smoking from hood, smells bad, burning oil...Does it sound like a rear oil seal leak?
no i doubt it, its most likely the valve cover gasket, nissans are notorious for this problem, i have a 97 nissan pathfinder and it had the cover gaskets replaced because they fail commonly on nissans, also i had a rear main seal leak and i had none of the symptoms you are describing
Could be a rear oil seal, but I would have a technician check to see where the leak is coming from. I'm not sure if you have a transverse or in-line engine, but if it is transverse, an oil seal leak will probably not cause the smoking from the hood.
It doesn't really sound like a main seal, those leaks usually just drip on the ground. Valve cover leaks tend to run over the exhaust manifold and make smoke. Get it checked out then decide what to do.
It could be a valve cover gasket. If i is the rear mail seal you should have oil all under the car. Mabey oil spot on the ground where you park your car.
have it checked by a mechanic could be a hundred different things as easy as a value cover gasket have it checked before jumping to conclusions
It could be a rear seal, but one thing is for sure, oil is dripping on your exhaust. Let it cool and you should be able to find the source of the leak.

Good luck!

  • Last night my car suddenly started leaking muddy oil. The temp gauge rose. Is this a bad head gasket?

all this happened in about 20 seconds. Thank you.Last night my car suddenly started leaking muddy oil. The temp gauge rose. Is this a bad head gasket?
YOU BLEW THE OIL SENDING SWITCH, OR SENSOR, DEPENDING ON THE YEAR OF THE CAR. dON'T DRIVE THAT CHARIOT, THAT LEAKING OIL COULD START A FIRE ON THE EXHAUST PIPES. hAVE IT TOED TO A REPAIR SHOP, AND HAVE THE OIL SENDING SWITCH REPLACED.Last night my car suddenly started leaking muddy oil. The temp gauge rose. Is this a bad head gasket?
Well the ';muddy oil'; was rusty water from poorly maintained cooling system! If you did not continue running even though hot, it may have no damage to engine. After all it could be a leaky hose, bad waterpump, damaged radiator, and a few more uncommon things!

However if you continued to drive, even though the problem may not have started in engine,-- continueing could blow head gasket, or even worse destroy engine, -- if you continue long enough! Engines just don't last long without water in them!
It is either a bad headgasket, cracked cylinder head or cracked block.....get it fixed ASAP, running it with coolant in the oil(muddy oil) will damage the main and rod bearings quickly and cost you a super fortune or even your car if its not worth fixing......
Where is the leak coming from?.. Check your coolant level, and engine oil level.. Also check that your engine oil doesn;t look milky on the dipstick.. It does sound like your engines **** itself.. but its hard to tell from your description... Make sure all your engine belts are in place aswell..
well i dont think so because it happen in 20 seconds...if it was bad it would took like at least 1 minute or probably 53 seconds or sometimes 1 minute so i think its not that bad but you should still be AWARE
Sounds like either a blown head gasket or a cracked/Warped head allowing oil to escape into the cooling system
Yep it sure is.Or a cracked head or block
sounds like your engine blew... better get that checked ASAP!!

1997 Honda Prelude oil burn or leak ?

    hi , i drive a 1997 honda prelude 2.2 lt DOHC VETC.

i have noticed that the oil level is going down and down . i was told to check the rear bumber to see it is wet with oil .. but no oil is on the rear end ... the ground is dry ! where is the oil going ?

how can i fix it ?

and advice from experts will be great . thankyou for your time and help1997 Honda Prelude oil burn or leak ?
could be bad/burnt piston rings. do you drive it hard? of course getting burnt up and then out the exhaust system? ever see any black smoke from the exhaust when you run it hard? if so, then its your piston rings. it needs to be changed if you mind adding a qt of oil every month or so and i tell ya it aint cheap and easy unless you do it yourself and you know how to do it. good luck

Could my thermostat have failed and caused oil to leak into the radiator, but not ruined the head gasket?

I brought my 1989 honda wagon into the shop to get a tune up and oil change,it was past due and the car was running rough. They talked me into getting a radiator flush, new top radiator hose, fuel injection service, etc. A total bill of 400!

When leaving the shop the owner said ';you car not start'; I said huh? ';you car die'; (he didnt speak much English) ';you car die tomorrow it not my fault';-WHAT

I asked him to explain and he said my car was old and could die anytime, I was suspicious and hounded him for a reason it would die he clammed up.

Fast forward a week my car overheats and spews water and a little oil.

I have checked for all the signs of a cracked head gasket but all the pieces do not fit.

There is oil in the reserve tank of the radiator, drops on the rad cap.

There is NO water in the oil.

    There is NO white smoke.

There are NO bubbles in the coolant when running the car .

The fan is not kicking in.

    The car Is overheating.

The engine is running well .

Any ideas?Could my thermostat have failed and caused oil to leak into the radiator, but not ruined the head gasket?
First thing is the fan not running. This however could be caused by a bad thermostat. If the sensor that tells the fan to run is not receiving hot water the fan won't turn on. This happens if the sensor is on the radiator or on the output side of the system. It can also happen if the sensor is in a pocket, without water flow the pocket may remain full of air.

I would say the thermostat may be bad. If you aren't getting white smoke and don't find any oil in the water or vice-versa my first guess is the head gasket is fine. Now, overheats can cause the head gasket to fail so don't let this go on and don't let it get too hot.

Apparently the car starts and runs now...you didn't say how that happened.

Take the radiator cap off, run the engine, when it gets hot the thermostat should be open and you should be able to see flow through the radiator.

Take the thermostat out, see if the car overheats. Or, test the thermostat in a pot of boiling water. It had better open by the time the water reaches boiling temp.

If you have flow, and thermostat works, look at the fan. It's probably a sensor, relay, or fuse.

Today i just noticed oil leaking from my car, What could be wrong?

First you need to know if it is engine oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid or antifreeze.Today i just noticed oil leaking from my car, What could be wrong?
most of the time it is the front seal or rear seal, this is not an easy thing to replace especially on a front wheel drive

added: also could be a valve cover gasket but 90% of the time front seal goes then the rearToday i just noticed oil leaking from my car, What could be wrong?
Oil leak could sprang from various places. From the oil filter seal, oil pan screw washer (screw you remove to drain oil), oil pan gasket, cylinder gasket, valve gasket, etc). If you have a clean engine you should probably be able to see where it's leaking. Another way to find out would be to look from the bottom from where the oil is dripping and trace the source upward. But if you have a dirty oil smudged engine you might have to get your engine clean (yourself or professionally) then just check the engine after you drive to see where the leak is coming from. Some people who does the engine steam cleaning will also do a pressure check for you to see where the leak is coming from... approx cost around $100-150.for cleaning and checking.
youve obviously got a leak, the problem is where. you may need to get it on a ramp and have a gud look underneath if it isnt blatently obvious lookin under the bonnet.also keep your eye on the dipstick and keep the oil level topped up as an engine with no oil will get poorly very quickly.
    Hiya

It will be a seal or gasket of some sort, that is letting the oil escape.

Best to check the oil level on the dipstick, see how much oil is in the engine, fill it up with more oil till it is on maximum level and then drive it to a local garage to get it fixed.

This way you won't damage the engine by running it on little or no oil.

Candidly there are several places oil could leak out, so it does need someone who is knowledgeable about cars to help you - and that's usually a reputable garage.

    Hope this helps
First you would need to find out where it is leaking from, you can go to your local auto parts supplier and get some cheap spray degreaser and spray it on then wash it with the water house. If you e-mail me after you figure that out I would be more than happy to give you further advise. My e-mail (incase it doesn't show it) is Jays2112@yahoo.com.
Congradulations .... you have an oil leak. First of all - find out where it's coming from. Park the car and immediately put an array of large paper (newspaper is fine) under the engine overnight. In the morning, remove the paper carefully and find the one with the oil drips directly over it is the leak. It could be as simple as an oil filter that is not tight enough, or as nasty as a cracked oil pan. If it is coming from the oil filter, just get the oil and filter changed as usual.. Otherwise, if you ain't joe mechanic, show your mechanic exactly where you found the drip - that should save a few hundred bucks for diagnosis.
faulty oil seal or loose oil filter, get it checked

    xxx
There are many reasons for oil leakage from a vehicle such as worn or bad gaskets to loose oil pan plug or oil filters. The cause is usually determined by tracing the leak to it's source. If you or someone you know and knows what they're doing can't do this it would be wise to take your car in for servicing as once a leak starts they only get worse if not fixed. Good Luck!!!
Have your gasket replaced, and make sure your drain bolt is on tight.
It could be comming from either engine, gearbox and if ur car is rear wheel drive, rear axle.

Does oil leak onto ur drive or garage floor? if yes then it could be any of the three, Its easy to know where oil is from if u put ur car in garage because u will know by where the oil is in relation to the car, up front engine, and or gearbox if transverse engine / gearbox, slightly behind location of engine will be the gearbox and at the back of car will be rear axle. If its the engine, it may just want the sump screws tightened, sump could be damaged, sump drain plug seal either missing or not tight enough, if leak is bad then its the sump or sump plug washer missing as the oil sinks to bottom of engine / sump so it cannot be above the level of oil in the engine, u could also poss have front or rear crankshaft oil seal gone but only if low amount of oil overnight. Engine oil after a few miles turns blackish and if u smell it u will smell petrol / smoky smell from it Just remembered, it could also be front casing gasket..

Gearbox oil is lighter, but the smell is different i cannot explain the smell, but the oil should be clearer than engine

Oil can leak from gaskets on casing, front and rear oil seals, drain plug could be loose, but highly unlikely.

Rear axle, more likely to be lose backplate, just tighten up bolts, it has a oil seal as well but I dont think it is at fault.

No disrespect meant to the guys who mentioned Rocker gasket, head gasket, oil will only leak out from these when engine is running, when car is in garage and engine switched off the oil slowly drains back down into the sump, so as I said, if it is the engine that is leaking, then the oil cannot leak from any higher than the oil level when engine stopped.

There are some exceptions though, slanted or engines on their sides, then yes it could be anything from sump up to rocker gasket, VW beetles have these type of engines.
did you recently have an oil change? If yes, possibly they didn't tighten the oil pan plug, or oil filter on a little cockeyed. If these two can be eliminated, valve cover or oil pan gasket.
numerous reasons some minor some more serious -gearbox oil seal, drive shaft seals in differential, sump gasket leaking, rocker box gasket, crankshaft oil seal, cylinder head gasket etc.most older cars loose some oil at various points of minor significance.if the oil leak is heavy get it looked at

Leaking oil filled electric radiator - safe to use?

Since Winter is starting in my part of the world, i brought my electric oil filled radiator out, but i noticed it's been leaking oil. You used to be able to hear the oil moving around inside it whenever it was moved, but now I hear nothing. I plan to replace it, but i was wondering if it's safe to use for tonight? What will happen if there is no oil in it and i turn it on, will it blow the power fuse? Or just not produce any heat? It's one of these kind: http://www.hardwarestore.com/media/product/280677_front200.jpgLeaking oil filled electric radiator - safe to use?
no you shouldnt use it if oil leaked out...the oil is what circulates the heat in the unit and keeps the electric coil or heater in the heater from buring out....it is a fire hazard or a danger for blowing breaker or grounding out an causing a dangerous shock hazard....Leaking oil filled electric radiator - safe to use?
Given the oil is meant to circulate the heat and that oil is low or gone, the radiator will produce an extreme hot spot. Of course it would be a fire hazard, so don't use it. Get it checked out or get a new one.
No!! Could be a fire hazzard.
I wouldn't chance it. Bundle up for one night.

  • My oil is leaking from my car. does anyone know why and the cheapest way to go about this?

i have a 1985 grand marquisMy oil is leaking from my car. does anyone know why and the cheapest way to go about this?
one of your hoses could be leaking I have 1977 Mercury Marquis old cars are a pain in the butt.My oil is leaking from my car. does anyone know why and the cheapest way to go about this?
First you need to find out where the oil is leaking from it could be many things from a oil senser to a gasket etc then once you find where the oil is leaking from then you can find out how much it cost to fix it because it can leak from so many areas it really depends on where it is as to what it will cost to repair it because it could cost anywhere from 5 - 10 to 100 and up but until you know the source of the leak there is really no way to answer the question wisely
you,ll have to clean the engine off before you can find out where its leaking from, then ask about a repair on it ,right now there's a lot of places that it could be leaking from, clean it off and run it long enough to see where its coming from on it,good luck.
it could also be the valve cover about 15 dollars a side plus abou an hour in the shop unless you have the book on the car and tools or a friend whose handy, or it could be a seal front or back or worse take it to autozone for a free code check and ask them guys about this an older car can drool oil or fluids and if you check them every week go on for years its bad for the earth but cheaper than some repairs also try this go to a regular top garage with good mechanics and ask for a free safty checkj things like the brakes and fluids and wheels and so on now as they are reporting the problems and the estimates to fix it all there ask about the oil leak then say I ll be back about the repairs then ask an older adult relative about the best places to go as they know the bargains and the foolish non bargains from time and experiance
It's leaking because the seals or gaskets are worn out or something is loose. Where the leak is will determine the cost to repair it. I cannot do better than that with the little info. It's leaking because it still has oil in it. Is there any place you don't see oil smeared? Above that, there's no leak.
Step 1..determine where the oils leaking from. 2.. figure out the price for the repair to stop the leak. 3.. if it is cheaper to fix it than to buy another car go buy the part which is hopefully just a gasket or two and fix it.
About 30 different places it could be leaking from. Some are simple 20 dollar repairs some are several hundred dollar repairs.
you can get a leak detection kit for less than $20 at autozone type places. Oil additive and uv light to find the leak. then get a haynes guide or similar and replace the faulty gasket. good luck!
You gotta find out where its leaking hopefully its just a valve cover or pan gasket and not the seals around ur tranny and engine. Ford made really cheap paper gaskets for the valve covers of a 85 Marq..
Harley Guy is right you are not giving a person much information to work with. Would be nice to know where it is coming from.
It depends on where the oil is leaking. ? not enough information.
It could be a hole in the oil pan, or a leaky seal somewhere. Can't really tell from here.
ya, bring it to a garage now, before it breaks more and costs 10 times more to fix.
fix the oil pan. should be way less than $100 to do if yuo do it on yourself.
need a new gasket around oil pan..or someone either stripped the bolt when oil change.
    stop-a-leak
buy the cheapest oil to put in there

Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Oil Filter Leak?

Mercedes Benz E320 1994 Oil & transmission leak?

I own a 1994 Mercedes Benz E320. I went to get my oil changed from Jiffy Lube (Great Service). However, they told me my oil and transmission were leaking and I should get them checked out. They also recommended that I get fuel filter service, transmission service and cabin air filter service.

Can anyone give recommendations for a good service center in the east bay and any other comments.Mercedes Benz E320 1994 Oil %26amp; transmission leak?
Sounds like a typical Jiffy up-sell. I would get a second opinion on those services before you went ahead and did them.

When did you do the filter changes last? The recommended Benz intervals are every 2 years/30K miles for the trans fluid and filter and every 4 years/60K miles for the fuel filter. The dust filter should be changed every year but keep in mind that not all W124 chassis ( E-class from 86 to 95 ) even had them ( although they were more common in the 94 and 95 model years )Mercedes Benz E320 1994 Oil %26amp; transmission leak?
Don't fool around, take it to a Mercedes dealer. Even if you don't get it fixed there you will get an accurate diagnosis of your issues.

Am I wrong to assume my mechanic is capable of cleaning the oil off of my '96 Ford Taurus' motor to find leak?

We took my husband's car (1996 Ford Taurus) to the shop to have the spark plugs and belt changed. There was also an oil leak in the engine that the mechanics were supposed to look at. We already had the plugs and the belt for the car, since we'd intended to change them ourselves but haven't had the time to do it recently.

    The mechanic called my mom about the car today and told her that we'd need to take the car to have the engine steam cleaned because there was so much oil on it and they couldn't tell where the leak was. They also told her that they had changed the spark plugs, although they had to purchase new ones (at $6 each)because the ones we had brought in ';were the wrong size.';

I waited half an hour for them to call me after that, then gave up and called them. At first they said the car was ';ready,'; then confirmed that I would have to take it to a car wash, have it cleaned, and bring it back. They never said anything about the spark plugs directly to me.Am I wrong to assume my mechanic is capable of cleaning the oil off of my '96 Ford Taurus' motor to find leak?
ok that is a good question. If you brought the parts and assuming they were wrong...the garage should have put the car to the side and let you make the decision whether you wanted them to purchase the correct plugs. Also..any garage I know has the means to clean the engine themselves rather than have you take it to the car wash and have you do it.

My suggestion would be that you tell them you will pay the same price for the plugs they installed that you would pay at the auto parts store...you purchased them yourself to save money.

That would be an unauthorized repair.

Secondly, I'd ask them for the old plugs...so you can compare at the parts store that you purchased the correct plugs. If you did then you owe them nothing for the plugs just the labor...which is what you originally had on mind in the first place.

And I would never take this car to that garage again.Am I wrong to assume my mechanic is capable of cleaning the oil off of my '96 Ford Taurus' motor to find leak?
just pay for their spark plugs and return yours...you shouldnt be paying more labor but you will be charge for their parts...how do you know the car is leaking oil if you cant see it???
Here in California we have a Bureau of Auto Repair where you can complain about practices like what you have experienced. Try and negotiate a settlement, like having the labor for replacing the plugs applied towards the labor for replacing what ever gasket is leaking. It sounds to me like you went to a pretty bad shop, since anywhere I have gone to, either would steam clean it themselves or take it to a car wash for you. Your lesson learned is that this is not the place to have your car repaired and let everyone know your feelings. Most shops rely on good referrals for a large part of their business. Let them know how you feel.

Is it possible for oil to be leaking out my head gasket?

I have a 99 Dodge Stratus and I know the head gasket is bad and is leaking oil. Is that where the oil is prob coming from? How long could I drive it? ThanksIs it possible for oil to be leaking out my head gasket?
You can drive it til is hydro locks...

I'd say yes, it is possible.

Oil can get intothe head, and mix with coolant.. check your oil dipstick, if its like chocolate milk.. then your headgasket needs to be replaced asap.

also, it would be a distributor seal leaking, or an exhaust intakeIs it possible for oil to be leaking out my head gasket?
It's unusual for such a serious problem as a head gasket leaking oil and the car is still running normally. So if the engine is still running as always I would guess the valve cover gasket is leaking and the oil is flowwing down the sides of head. If the head gasket is leaking, you're damaging the engine every minute it is running and it should be fixed immediatly.
the oil is not leaking from the head gasket it is leaking from the valve cover gasket.. and running down on the manifold and smoking.. remove the valve cover.. purchase a gasket ask for rubber.. clean up the manifold gasket area and the area on the head... purchase some cement to hold the gasket in place while up put it back on the engine.. ok. you can drive check the oil and add some if it is more than half way down. ok.
an oilway feeding the OHC with oil under(now) less pressure than ideal. check radiator for oil slick %26amp; dipstick for grey sludge of water mixing in the oil. FIX pronto. contaminated water means a full flush out and a head gask job. engine oil and water means same job, and a quick cleanout-or the crank will rust from contact with the water. check compression-you know you have a bad head gsk, you prob overheated it. just pray you don't have to plane/replace the head.
Yes. I wouldn't drive it to long you might blow the engine if you run to low on oil and that will cause it to seize up and not run and then you will have a big paper weight. It might cost more to repair then a new engine but you need to check it out with a mechanic. Good Luck

  • What could be leaking besides the oil pan on a 1999 buick park avenue?

I'm trying to find out where an oil leak is coming from. Could it be that the oil pan needs replacing or is there anything else located on the driver's side that could make it leak? could be the transmission oil

best to have it checked out
Could be the power steering pump
1.Green or Orange is coolant, dexcool is orange like V8 Splash Juice. Dexcool is used on GMs since 97 and above.

    2.Red is Tranny fluid.

3.Brown like maple syrup is motor oil

4.Clear like corn Karo Corn syrup is brake fluid

    5.Blue is windshield wiper fluid.

By position is brake fluid or tranny. The color will tell you for sure what it is.
A hose, the rear main seal (motor to transmission) the transmission. Could be coming from a head gasket, runs down the side of the engine and drips where it does but does not originate at that location.

Best thing to do is get the engine really clean and the you'll have a better chance of locating the source of the leak(s).
It could be your valve covers or intake gaskets, 3800's were notorious for valve cover gasket leaks. Also, check your oil filter, maybe it isn't on tight.
sounds like your rear crankshaft is on the way out.
Sounds like a rear seal or oil sending unit. Your best bet is to buy and additive that is fluorescent and added to the oil. Use a uv light to scan the engine and note where the fluorescence originates. That's how real mechanics find hard leaks on almost anything, even A/C.

Why is my car oil leaking?

I have noticed that there is a little leak under my steering wheel rack.I will take it to the garage tomorrow but would like to know what could be the problem before I take it, so I know what I am dealing with. If you could also tell me approximately how much you think a leak would cost to fix it. It will be appreciated.

    Ford Fiesta (2003)

ThanksWhy is my car oil leaking?
Let's hope it's just a hose and not the steering rack, they are expensive. Hoses are usually about 100 to 50 each plus labour. Why is my car oil leaking?
Frankly it could be anything, from failed oil seals, failed gaskets to simply a connection that needs tightening a little, so the cost could vary wildly.
One of the seals probably dried out in your rack and now it drips. Is it red fluid?

Call your local auto parts store and get a quote for a rebuild rack and pinion. Add $100 to the cost and that will give you a rough estimate of the cost, or change it yourself. It is an easy job with basic tools.
It may not be leaking from the steering, it may be leaking from the sump and seeping along, a main dealer will cost about 拢85.00 per hour plus any parts and they have a fixed priced time to do it so they may allow 2 hours to sort the problem whether or not it is fixed in 1 hour or not, I would have been incline to take it for an MOT whether or not it needs it and you will be told the problem exactly.
sucks dude get rid of your ford man
It could be a number of things such as---a oil pan/ valve cover gasket leaking rack and pinion could be bad. It could be a number of things as you can see. Take it to a reliable shop that you trust. As far as cost it is hard to say it all depends what they find wrong.
An oil leak can come from a number of things. From a gasket to even the oil filter not scewred on properly. If its just a gasket then it won't cost that much for the gasket itself but if you have a mechanic do it then the price will go up quickly. Try and pressure wash the engine and see if you can see were it comes from after the engine is clean and you should be able to tell why its leaking.
    it's a FORD !!!!
What colour is the oil ? If its black its from the engine,if its clear its from the steering rack.Whichever it is it will need new gaskets.
no problem, just leave it until it stops cos it's then empty, so end of leak problem!

My truck is leaking oil in the front of the motor. What does tt mean?

it is a 98 ford expedition. please helpMy truck is leaking oil in the front of the motor. What does tt mean?
It means big trouble if you drive it. If you can't visually see where it is coming from and able to fix it, then get a mechanic to check it out for you.My truck is leaking oil in the front of the motor. What does tt mean?
If by front of the motor you mean the bottom front then you could either have an oil pan gasket leak, front main seal leak, or timing cover leak. Oil pan gasket is easy, timing cover takes a little more time, the front main seal will take a little effort as well but anyone with engine building knowledge could knock it out relatively easy depending on what the motor is and what it is in. hope this helps.
A hose may have came undone, but other than you should check the oil rings (seals) on your motor... the seal may be going bad causing leaking but i recommend changing your oil why your at it replace the oil filter, oil rings, and everything should be back tip-top.
Front seal or timing or timing chain cover or oil filter or valve cover
If it's at the top it's a valve cover gasket.

If it's at the bottom, it's the oil pan gasket..
    somewhere your engine is leaking!
Front seal on the crankshaft is leaking.
    valve cover gasket...

What could cause oil to leak out all at once?

Hi, I have a 1994 Chrysler Concord 3.5 that leaks oil.

I'm confused because it doesn't appear to be leaking a little at a time but all at once.

I will check it every other day and it will be fine and then one day I'll go out there and it will be almost empty as if it just gushed out all at once.

    What could cause this?

I've never heard of this happening before but it seems to be the case right now with this car.

Thanks for any advice you may have to offer. What could cause oil to leak out all at once?
fast leaks are usually do to 1 of 3 problems or a combination of them all.

Front crankshaft/camshaft seal , pan gaskets , or rear main crankshaft seal .

I have seen valve covers leak really bad also.

    Mainly it's one of the 3 .

Very commonly it's the pan gasket and/or rear main crankshaft seal.

Do not run a thicker oil (or fix-a-leak like LUCAS oil stabilizer). it will starve the thousands of an inch oil gap clearances in the various parts of the engine.

This is a common ';friendly mechanic'; suggestion to people with engine knocking/tapping sounds , leaks , or oil lights coming on.

Repair the vehicle properly and save yourself from other costly repairs . What could cause oil to leak out all at once?
It sounds like you are overlooking something like maybe a dip stick that is not going all the way in. Is there a large puddle under it on the days it is almost empty? Does it really need 4 or 5 quarts of oil on those days? Is your neighbor sneaking over at night and draining your oil occasionally? I have known that to happen in all sorts of permutations. I would at least start checking it every day at the same time and location. Also, check your PCV system. Pressure in the crankcase can force oil up the dipstick until the level in the oil pan drops below the bottom of the stick at which point it begins to read correctly.
during the car warm if there is any leaking seals it will cause it to come out all at once..there might be a leaking rear main seal or a leaking pan gaskt leaking head gaskets or a leaking bolt...you have to try to find where the leak is coming from...there might just be a leak and there is something that clogs it up and then gets tossed around and starts leaking...
well that depends on when you are checking it is it warm or cold was the engine just ran? did you try to add oil to the car when this happens then wait and check again to see if it is even higher than what it was the other day
It could be a hole in your oil filter or a bad gasket between it and your engine block.
you better check the drain plug. if it,s leaking that much all at 1 time then the plug might not be there.
typical, did you forget to put the oil filler cap back on?

    Astro Van.....Oil Pan-leak-repair ?

I have been fixing up my project vehicle a 1986 astrovan that seems to be in good order however it has been sitting for years. After a fuel pump and brakes it runs and stops......i was hoping to paint it and customize interior when i realized it has a slow OIL LEAK. It seems to come from up by the seal. i was told that dropping the pan might be a huge expense more then van is worth. 1) how hard is it (hours rated ) to drop pan, must engine have to be lifted. 2) is it visually possible to see where leak is coming from...such as crankshaft where as it too would be better of to buy other van something i wish to avoid cuz i have invested several hundred in this project w/ dreams of a cool customized van. But i also want be smart about it.

    any ideas...thanksAstro Van.....Oil Pan-leak-repair ?
better check the rear main seal after the pan is off, they go sometimes too and leak oil. you have to loosen the motor mounts and jack the engine up so it will clear the crank. while you have the pan off, you might as well change the oil pump too.

Can you drive a car for over 7 hours when it is leaking oil?

Umm hell no unless you want to spend $2500 for a new engine. Check the oil at every 100 to 200 miles to make sure that you have enough and top it up.Can you drive a car for over 7 hours when it is leaking oil?
It would also be a good idea to have oil being used with maximum effecieciency. Get more miles per gallon with mpg, go to www.asavingsongas.myffi.biz, you will be surprised. Can you drive a car for over 7 hours when it is leaking oil?
Yes you can, but its not recommended... If the leak is too bad, take it to the mechanic. If the motor runs our to oil, it might broke down, and it will be more expensive to replace the motor than to repair the oil leak.
    No.
Yes, but you better keep checking the oil level and fill it up when needed. You will ruin the engine if it runs out of oil.
Sure...but don't let the oil level drop too low!
yes as long as you stop and refill the lost oil before it gets to low it also depends on how bad the leak is
no because most likely you wouldn't be able to stop that well
Yes. If the leak is real slow, you will not have trouble. Do check the oil level and add more when necessary.

You should get that fixed, though.
    depends.

engine needs oil to run. The hotter it gets, the more it needs.

So it depends how fast you are losing the oil.

If its just a bit, its not bad, you can refill oil when it gets low.

If it leaks like 0,5 Liter in 20 minutes, its no good.
Only if you keep topping it up before it runs too low and the warning light comes on. If the engine overheats it may well cease-up completely and then you will need a new engine.
yeah, depending on how bad the leak is..
yes, just keep it filled. think of it as a continual oil change
sounds like your planning a trip. if the leak isn't too bad, you should be fine as long as you keep checking the oil level. look at your engine oil pressure gage also. low oil, low pressure. take a few quarts with you.
I've done this before but u do need to stop and check the oil. When needed add the oil as soon as possible. Also with my old car I had problems with overheating..not sure if oil leak was the cause but just in case have gallon jugs of water with u.
Yes, I've been driving my car for weeks with an oil leak. My husband just put in some more oil and he bought some stuff that is supposed to stop the leak from walmart too, and he just poured that in there last weekend, and it's been fine since then.
not if the leak is real fast..but if it is slow its iight..but u need to get that fixed fast....
you could but it probably isnt a good idea.
yes but not a good idea depending on how bad the leak is
yes you can drive a car for a long time if it leaking oil you just have to keep putting oil in it...this is not recommended though
Depends upon the size of the leak. If it's a major leak, no way. If it's a small leak, seven months could be just fine. If you have a huge poll of oil under your vehicle after is has been sitting for a day, then I would say no. If it's just some drops, then not a problem, but you should still look into getting that leak fixed. It can cause problems down the road.
It depends on how big the leak is. If it is small leak, sure, but I would suggest you check it if you see any auto shop. Do it right away, or if you are in the highway, keep filling motor oil , like after 50 miles drive, make sure it is full until you find a shop. If you don't have time, just keep filing it. You dont want your engineer burnt!
    yes you can
there is a product you can put in with your oil that tries to stop the leak. ask a salesperson at walmart or any car service place to show the right one. if it was me and i was desperate, i would get some of that put in, and about 5 quarts of oil, and stop every 30 minutes on the trip at first and check the oil, adding some as needed. if you do ok after about 3 30-minute checks, then extend it to every one hour.

if you drive it with the oil too low,the engine will overheat and blow, which will mean a huge repair bill.

  • How should I seal a leaking oil pan plug?

Our oil pan got stripped when we got an oil change and so we got a heli-coil put in but it's still leaking a bit. What's the best way to seal it? MIghty puddy, silicon...? How should I seal a leaking oil pan plug?
depending on how bad its leaking you may have to try and use another gasket on the plug and if that doesn't work rtv sealant may work on it for a while, but i think you,ll wind up changing it,they do make a larger plug that will thread its self and stop them from leaking, but you have to be careful when using those ,you get one shot at it when your doing it and if it doesn't work you usually have to get another oil pan, good luck with it.How should I seal a leaking oil pan plug?
your welcome, good luck with it ,those can be really hard to repair. Report Abuse

Back to your original issue. Who ever changed the oil and stripped out the drain plug should have comprehensive insurance. I never in a thousand years would allow someone to install a heli-coil in the oil pan when it was still on the car. All it takes is one chip of steel to ruin an oil pump or get pumped through the oil system.

All you can do now is purchase a new factory drain plug. The threads do not seal the oil, its the tapered gasket under the hex flange. Some oil pan drain plugs have sealed O rings. Go to some local auto parts store or the dealer of your car and find the best drain plug with a gasket sealer at the top.
A liquid gasket, or a new drain plug.

I have a 93 pontiac transport and it leaking oil from underneathe the car.?

The oil is apparently coming from a plate looking thing.I have a 93 pontiac transport and it leaking oil from underneathe the car.?
Why not just have your oil changed at say aJiffey lube they tell you what is going on and your car has a oil change.

That is the easy way out and it could be as simple as a oil filter loose for $20.00 try my ideaI have a 93 pontiac transport and it leaking oil from underneathe the car.?
The plate is a skid plate, the oil pan and drain plug is under that.

The oil pan itself needs a new gasket more than likely.
Does the plate looking thing have a drain plug? If so, it's probably a oil pan gasket leak. Easy fix if you have some time and a haynes manual. It's just dropping the pan replacing the gasket and bolting back up. This is after draining the oil of course. If the plate is a skid plate, then you might have to find out exactly where is coming from. Usually washing down the bottom, and checking extensively for leaks is your best bet.

What could cause oil to leak into the carburetor on a ';Wright Stander'; Mower.?

I work for a landscaping company and today when i started the engine to the mower I saw a huge puff of smoke come out and then it continued to smoke after running for a minute. I then shut the mower down, removed the air filter, and took a peek inside the carburetor. What I saw was a small puddle of oil inside the carburetor, The type of mower is a WRIGHT STANDER and it has a 19 hp YAMAHA engine. Unfortunately our mechanic is out of work for the month due to a ';shredded'; nerve and can't make it in. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. What could cause oil to leak into the carburetor on a ';Wright Stander'; Mower.?
was the mower tipped just before this? like to change the blades or a belt? this is the most common cause. second would be a badly clogged air filter. either way, what is happening is oil is coming through the crankcase breather into the air filter housing. if it has a paper filter, make sure it's not oil soaked- replace if so.What could cause oil to leak into the carburetor on a ';Wright Stander'; Mower.?
the odds are that the oil was from the breather for the crankcase. this is a hose that alows fresh air (filtered) to enter the engine block. I would guess the engine may have a pcv valve that may be plugged or sticking. this is usually the cause of the oil in carb condition. normally blowby vapors are drawn into the intake by the pcv valve line

I have a Hotpoint Washer Machine model WLW3700B, and it is leaking oil. What part do I need to change?

Either a seal or a case gasket in the gear case is leaking or the case itself is cracked. Gear cases are expensive so hopefully it's a seal.

I own a 2000 760 Turbo Volvo, why is my oil and transmission leaking, when I see no spill on the ground?

It seem like I am putting oil and transmission fluid in it all the time. There are no leaks in my garage, so where is it going? Has anyone had problems with turbo's or with this problem?I own a 2000 760 Turbo Volvo, why is my oil and transmission leaking, when I see no spill on the ground?
your probably loosing oil into your engine burning out of your exhaust. the transmission fluid could be leaking into your radiator. your radiator has a transmission cooling loop on it. so the seal between your radiator and transmission are not good.I own a 2000 760 Turbo Volvo, why is my oil and transmission leaking, when I see no spill on the ground?
Check also your PCV valve to for the engine oil. They might be on the same T fitting. That could be 2 different incidents.
check your modulator valve, if the diaphram is cracked it can suck the transmission fluid into the engine and burn it, the modulator valve works on the vacuum from the engine intake, and interprets the amount of vacuum to a shift point.

  • After a long trip my 1991 honda accord started leaking oil, Can someone help me diganose the cause?

it could be worn axle seals- causing the transmission to leak.

it could be the oil pan gasket- gave out to temp breakdown and wear causing oil to seep out through the cracks.

it could be be from the oil seal o-ring on the distributors rod stem.

it could be the valve gasket seal between the valve cover and the head.

last but not least, it could just be the oil filter is loose. After a long trip my 1991 honda accord started leaking oil, Can someone help me diganose the cause?
No one will be able to, until you give some more specifics. Transmission fluid or engine oil. What area is it leaking from? After a long trip my 1991 honda accord started leaking oil, Can someone help me diganose the cause?
Where is it leaking oil from??? And what kind of oil??? There are a lot of parts of your car that might be leaking
    vague!

97 honda accord ex leaking engine oil and mechanic say I need a vtec controller to fix it???

my mechanic says I need a vtec controller and it will cost $300. What is a vtec controller and I was wondering if there was a place I could get it for cheaper?97 honda accord ex leaking engine oil and mechanic say I need a vtec controller to fix it???
The VTEC controller? Are you sure he didn't mean the VTEC solenoid? The VTEC Controller is just there to control at which RPM VTEC engages..you probably don't even have one..its aftermarket....seems kinda weird...check into that. Maybe you ought to ask at a shop that speciailizes in Honda's. And as far as buying the selenoid, ebay is a great place. Or find the part number and you can get it from this site:

http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/97 honda accord ex leaking engine oil and mechanic say I need a vtec controller to fix it???
check where you are leaking oil from. If it has anything to do with VTEC it will probably be the solenoid. I would think it is just the gaskets especially if they haven't been replaced in a while.

If this is a honda specialist it may be the solenoid. If it is not, he's probably full of s**t.
If your car is leaking oil it is more than likely a blown gasket or seal. You may want to get a second opinion before you let your mechanic work on your vehicle. It could mena the difference between spending hundreds or spending thousands.
sounds like bs that is an aftermarket tuner racing part

Garrett 50 trim .63A/R (water and oil cooled) boost leak?

I just tested for boost leaks, and found one comming out of the Turbine housing. I can't pressurize the system to over 9psi using a big air compressor. The boost is leaking through the bearing housing and hissing out through the turbine wheel. Now what I really want to know is, what might be wrong with this turbo charger, if anything.

And would it be cheaper to try to fix it or replace the whole turbo?Garrett 50 trim .63A/R (water and oil cooled) boost leak?
The seal on the turbine is misaligned or bent. If your mechanically inclined, then it would be cheaper to fix, but if your not, then you may want to buy a new one.

How do you find out where your car is leaking oil from?

like what should i look at? just the oil pan %26amp; filter?

    or what?

and whats an easy way to tell what part of the car the leak is coming from? How do you find out where your car is leaking oil from?
look for where its clean and wet with oil before you wash itHow do you find out where your car is leaking oil from?
First you should raise your hood to see if you see oil on top of the engine, like around the valve covers, if not then pull your car up on some ramps and place a piece of cardboard down so you can see where the oil is leaking from. It could be your oil pan gasket or your oil filter , your tranny maybe leaking around the pan gasket , all so check your power steering pump and hose's. take a look at your transmission lines where they screw into the bottom of the radiator.
you need to get a engine oil dye and a black light

pour the dye into the engine oil,run the engine to normal operating temp. for at least 20 min.

now plug in the black light and look around until you see the lime green trail of oil to the leak source

valve covers, oil pan or rear main seal ,intake manifold

its the easy and fastest way to determined oil leaks
I would set down a white sheet of paper on the floor under the front end. About 4 x 4 feet. Do this over night to give it time to drip. Check the colour of the oil also . Normally red oil is from the transmission. Gold colour oil will be from the engine or power steering. Brake fluid will mix with water and other oils will not. Take note after looking at the drips on the sheet what was above the drip. good luck
You want to look for the darkest wettest part of the engine. Say you see it dripping crawl under it. Look on the tie rods first. Then if you see some follow the oil drip tragetory up to the pan, filter, etc.
Shampoo the engine compartment at your local carwash (carwarsh in Texas ). Then drive it home %26amp; inspect for fresh oil.
clean all engine down then run engine till hot and lay cardboard on floor under engine and leave sitting till oil drips down then trace it back.
Clean the engine and engine compartment, then look for fresh oil.
get under the car and look to see where its leakin from dau!!!!!!!1

A 1984 toyota van and the front timming cover and seals are leaking oil, how can I fix or how much 2 have fix?

Toyota dealership said that my front timming cover and seals are leaking oil and the rear main seal is leaking oil, how much would this cost me to have fix else where or how can I fix myself?

Thanks...A 1984 toyota van and the front timming cover and seals are leaking oil, how can I fix or how much 2 have fix?
    84 toyota

uhhh all that to be done by a repair shop or dealership may end up costing you more than the van is worth

A 1984 toyota van and the front timming cover and seals are leaking oil, how can I fix or how much 2 have fix?
First and formost, is there oil on the ground where you park for longer then three hours? If not its a scam, if there is you would also see oil on the side of the engine with the hood open, you can however fix it yourself with some basic knowledge and a manual.
It's true, this may cost more than the van is worth. Oil leaking from the timing belt cover could cam seal or front main seal. Either way, it's basically a timing belt job. $600. Rear main seal means the transmission has to come off, another $400.
~$1000 probably. Tranny needs to come off for the rear main seal. You can fix it if you are willing to take the tranny out. Front seals are easier.

  • My car leaks oil and makes a clicking sound and also smokes some?

leaking oil is proly a gasket... knoocking could be a rod or lifter. Smoke proly means you got a bent valve or rings or bad. Sounds like you need a mechanic badly. Check you oil... does it have a milky look to it?? What kind of car is it?? I could be better to have the motor rebuilt or trade it off.My car leaks oil and makes a clicking sound and also smokes some?
the clicking sound is the valve lifters.. lack of oil the oil level is lower than it should be.. place some newspaper under the engine and transmision to find out where the oil is leaking .. then you can take steps to correct this

How do you explain that oil is still leaking out of the USS Arizona after over 60+ years?

not to mention the unhappy familys of the sailors not being able to give a proper burial? How do you explain that oil is still leaking out of the USS Arizona after over 60+ years?
It's a lot of oil. It's to risky to try and pump it out.How do you explain that oil is still leaking out of the USS Arizona after over 60+ years?
For several weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor the Navy went to great lengths to recover the mortal remains of those who died in USS Arizona and the other ships which were sunk during that attack. One of my instructors in Hospital Corps School at Great Lakes in 1958 was one of those divers who went below to carry out that chore. Many of the mortal remains recovered were interred in the National Cemetery of the Pacific, also known as the ';Punch Bowl'; on Oahu.

The oil that is leaking is called bunker oil. It is quite heavy and viscous, unlike the oil one sees in an auto's engine today. And it is reaching the surface only a few drops at a time from a small leak in the hull of the ship.

You should also know that a major street in the vicinity of Pearl Harbor is named for the Captain of the Arizona, as is one for the ship's surgeon. The USS Arizona memorial is one of only two places in the U.S. where a Navy ship passing it has to render honors by having available crew man the rail and salute. The other place is Mount Vernon on the Potomac.

In short, the Navy did recover a lot of mortal remains from that ship. And the Navy continues to honor the losses suffered that day. Would that our nation had that long a memory.
I for one would be Proud to be entombed in a National Memorial or to have a family member there.

Shifting of the sea floor and of the ship its self allows for the oil to surface, it may never stop leaking, we can only hope for it is part of the Memorial.

    Vet-USAF
Yet another clueless liberal making speculations about how military people or their families view serving...
a lot of oil and a very small leak is how I would explain it.
Entombed in a National Historic Memorial is more than proper. It is a Memorial to all the brave men that died on the ship.
There were thousands of gallons of fuel oil in USS Arizona's bunkers when she was sunk. Damage from the bombs and the deterioration of the hull has caused leaks from the fuel tanks.

As for the burial site, USS Arizona is a fitting place for her crew. In fact, many of her survivors and other Pearl Harbor veterans have had their ashes spread across USS Arizona in the decades after the attack. I have heard some people complain about the lack of ';proper'; burial, but can you cite one family that is upset about USS Arizona's crew being entombed in her hull?
A battleship would have about 10000 or so tons of fuel on board, so that fact that it is still leaking is unremarkable. It takes very little oil to make an impressive slick.
it's easy there was fuel oil in her bunkers when she sank and there are leaks. you couldn't figure that out for yourself?

they have all received a proper burial. that is one of the most revered burial places in the US.

You should mind your own business and not be a snitch!!! If you have that much of a problem with it, contact the owner.
The first people I would contact is the Police because they are illegally parked. No vehicles are allowed to be on the path except for crossing over it to get to a drive. I would also contact the local council and talk to them as they have to maintain the path.

I hate people who park on the path so that I have to walk on the road and put my children at danger.

Report it and get the car removed.

Home inspection warranty, I brought a new home and my oil heater is leaking what can I do?

I just purchased my first home 5 months ago. When the people came to do the home inspection they checked the air conditioning and I don鈥檛 remember if they checked the heater. I purchased the home in the summer time. Now that its winter I am using the heater and it is leaking very bad and it is causing fumes in my home. Is there anything legally I can do to make the previous homeowners liable for covering the charges for a new oil heater? I called the lawyer I used for my closing and I am waiting for a return phone call.Home inspection warranty, I brought a new home and my oil heater is leaking what can I do?
Its funny how everyone jumps right to the lawsuits...

The sellers ARE liable if they knew and didn't say.

The Inspector IS liable if it was obvious and he didn't catch it. (and the heating system is a MAJOR part of an inspection).

The buyers agent IS liable if he didn't check it out or if he missed a 'red flag'.

There are 3 different stages to this. FIRST, you may have a Home Warranty Policy (common on re-sale homes, good for one year). These are pretty typically provided by sellers and are essentially insurance policies that cover this kind of thing and keep all of us out of court. Give them a call (your agent or atty will have their info) and they will send out a technician right away. It will cost you about $50 for a service call fee. This is not your homeowners policy - it is a separate one year policy.

SECOND - raise hell with your agent. In cases like this the squeaky wheel gets the grease. You do not need an attorney at this point. Give the agent(s) and the seller an opportunity to make this right. Let them deal with the inspector (they always give that limited liability crap, don't believe it). You should be able to get this fixed because it wasn't properly inspected/disclosed.

THIRD - Have your agent set up a mediation. This is better than court for you because it is informal. At this point you should consult an attorney, but 90% settle before this.

Good luckHome inspection warranty, I brought a new home and my oil heater is leaking what can I do?
No, the sellers aren't liable. If you had a home inspection then the heater should have been inspected at that time, regardless of the season. You need to contact the people who did the inspection and the company who issued your warranty. They should come out and fix the heater for a small fee.
Call your realtor and talk to them. Usually when you buy a home it is not covered under a warranty if someone else has lived in it. If it were a brand new home it would be covered under the builder and be fixed free of charge. It sounds to me like you have a serious problem if fumes are coming into the living area. I would call a heating and air conditioning person right away and have them come out to see what the problem is and have it fixed instead of waiting for a call back from the lawyer. I doubt the other people will have to pay for it though, you are now the homeowner and it is your responsibility for any repairs. Home inspections are not necessarily to see if appliances and the furnaces are in working condition, they are more to look at the foundations, electrical, etc. things like that. Unfortunatly if the furnace had a problem there is no way of proving it.

    Good Luck.
As I home inspector, i can tell you the responsibility of a home inspector is to state the condition of visible and accessible components of a house and its systems AT THE TIME of inspection. Five months later, anything can happen.

This is a commen misconception , however. If I go to the doctor for a physical exam and am decalred to be in good health, but I develop a health problem 5 months later, there is no responsibility of the doctor to have anticipated that.
If there is any money to be gotten it is from the Inspector. Somewhere on that paperwork it will tell you that they are only liable for the cost of the inspection. It may not have actually been leaking at the time of the inspection.

What you can do is get yourself a home warranty policy. It costs under $500/year, and covers things like that. Visit http://www.ahswarranty.com for more info.
read the inspector's report...there should be reference as to

what they inspected and the recommendations given...

I really don't think the sellers are on the hook for anything after

closing, cause this matter should have been handled before transferring title.......some monies should have held in escrow

until all repairs had been completed.
You'll have to check with someone in construction or an attorney that handle this type of issue. In my state, MI, we are limited to the cost of the home inspection, @ $250.00. Once they've given their OK, the previous owners are off the hook. I found this out when the 3 story, south wall of my house was falling away from the rest of the house. I had to pay to have the foundation permanently re-piered. You may want to talk to your insurance agent too, but do it carefully, they're geared for not approving claims.

I have a 1989 GMC S-15 Pick Up with oil pan leak (see details)?

The oil pan seems to be sitting right on the cross-member, and has caused a crack or split and oilt is dripping out at a constant rate.

I checked the Motor mounts (did the brake/drive/reverse thing to check IF the were broken) NOT the case, but they seem to be ';sagging';,,,the rubber parts ';look'; ';stressed';.

Could it be that the motor mounts NEED replacing?? Will that bring the engine up higher, so the pan clears the crossmember??

Also, can the pan be replaced by lifting the enging up slightly OR does it need to come out ALL the way??

I quess I can replace the motor mounts by ';lifting'; the motor up by the pan (with wood%26amp; Jack) and too, do I have to loosen the Trans Mount??

----Sorry for ALL the questions, but HOP you can help me with an answer!!

Thanks - JOHN in Whitehall, PAI have a 1989 GMC S-15 Pick Up with oil pan leak (see details)?
Yes to all except do not lift the engine by the pan. It would be hard to replace it that way.I have a 1989 GMC S-15 Pick Up with oil pan leak (see details)?
change the mounts and it will help that problem .i would use a cherry picker and lift engine from the top you do not have to take off trans mount or remove engine completely
Sounds like you just need to loosen the motor mounts enough to jack the engine up.It's possible that the rubber gromets on the motor mounts are dry rotted, allowing the engine to drop.
Whether it's a 2.5 or 4.3, possibly even 2.8, it is a bear to do if 2wd. The 4x4 trucks are actually easier because all you have to do is pull the dif to get at it.
Be sure to remove fan blade before jacking up engine, and ck dist cap for clearance

I got a (1995 Z28) and i was just wondering as with any car car's are gonna leak oil no matter what?

just because they sit in a place for a while thats natural/normal right? now i got a 1995 Z28 and it leaks oil not a whole lot but it does leak keep in mind it does have over 140,000 miles on it so if your car leaks a ton of oil does that usually mean you have gaskets or somethings broken/worn out? so if i were to have a brand new car and park it in my driveway and it was parked for a while would it be normal to look under the car and see a couple small oil spots?I got a (1995 Z28) and i was just wondering as with any car car's are gonna leak oil no matter what?
Many LT1's will leak past the Rear Main Seal. Its pretty old, that's my guess. Just don't let your oil run low if you aren't inclined to fix it.

At this age, its pretty common.I got a (1995 Z28) and i was just wondering as with any car car's are gonna leak oil no matter what?
It's hard to keep a vehicle with that many miles on it from leaving spots on the carport. But cars are not supposed to leak oil. If I bought a new car and it was leaving spots it'ld go right back to the dealer. but as they get warn it's not uncommon to get spots on the floor. I wouldn't worry about it if it's not leaking enough to have to add oil between changes.

  • Which additive in the market works better on automobile engine oil leaks?

The best answer is ';none of them';. Don't use them! Replace the defective part. The leak sealers work by attacking the seal material, causing it to swell, which temporarily stops the leak. However, the seal materials are then hard and brittle, and over time begin to crack, causing more leaks in new places. Leak sealer works great in the very short term, but causes far more problems later, because you've damaged all the seals, not just the one that was leaking.Which additive in the market works better on automobile engine oil leaks?
Depends on why it leaks. It either needs a repair to cure the leak (gasket, pan plug, filter, sending unit, . . .) or an engine repair to stop it from losing oil (blow by, valve seals, . . .). Where is it coming from?Which additive in the market works better on automobile engine oil leaks?
I work on quite a few high mileage used cars and try many products for one thing or another. If the engine is leaking due to a rubber seal somewhere,a product called Main-Sta works good.Put some in the crankcase and drive it normally. After about 48 hours, the seals will swell up and seal tightly, permanently. There are other brands available that do the same thing but I never tried them after using Main-Sta because the results are sometimes incredible.
    None, have the leak repaired.
In my lifetime, I haven't seen any work. I've tried them all, in desperation.

Ihave coolant in the oil of a 93 Pontiac Grand Am. How do i fix this coolant leak?

If it has the 3.1L V6, most likely the lower intake gaskets have failed. Those engines are notorious for that problem. This problem should be fixed right away, as well as changing the oil. Failure to fix this will result in damage and eventual failure of the crankshaft's main bearings due to the coolant contamination.Ihave coolant in the oil of a 93 Pontiac Grand Am. How do i fix this coolant leak?
it is a head gasket.Ihave coolant in the oil of a 93 Pontiac Grand Am. How do i fix this coolant leak?
The head gasket is leaking most likely...if you aren't lucky, it could be a cracked head or block...

Not an easy job, it will cost anywhere from $800 to $1200 on most v6 or v8 engines...
most likely a head gasket...not that hard of a fix...make sure you change the oil also. if this car has hi mileage...you may want to look at getting another car...it's a '93...unless it's been real well maintained...it's about done anyway...trust me on this...they are throw away cars for the most part...drive em till they are done and junk them...we have several of them in out salvage yard...in many cases they are not worth fixing. But that's not my call....it's your car...if you say fix it...then fix it.
you dont lol buy a new motor.
You got a blown headgasket. DO NOT OPERATE YOUR CAR UNTILL REAIRED. You'll blow the engine.
another grand am with a bad head gasket i'm shocked you gotta take it to a shop but even then its more trouble than its worth and dont buy another pontiac they are sold cheap for a reason
You have nothing to lose so do this. Go to an auto parts store and buy some Bars Leak heavy duty block sealer, use as instructed, change your oil and see.
the intake gaskets are leaking, replace them, I have done this to my 93 grand am 2 times in 142,000 miles, if you drive it this way you will burn the engine up as the anti-freeze is contaminating your oil and it will wash the cylinder walls down and lock the engine up, it's about a $600. job if you take it to someone to fix it, grand am's are noted for this problem with the 3.1 engine.

My engine seems to be leaking oil from the top of where the cap is,is that possible?

the head gasket was replaced not too long ago,but my guage for the oil keeps telling me it need some even though i just put in 2 quarts.how much iol does a v6 engine take?My engine seems to be leaking oil from the top of where the cap is,is that possible?
as always the ASKER leaves out the proper info....

MAKE, MODEL,YEAR....WTF? hard to help when your not smart enough to provide the info!!!!!

all v6 domestic take 5 quarts until 2005 when GM brought in the 3.5L which takes 4 quarts. Asian cars vary

My engine seems to be leaking oil from the top of where the cap is,is that possible?
yes it is possible that the engine oil is leaking from the oil filler cap. If the engine has a lot of blow by between the piston rings and the cylinder walls the compression will go down to the crank case and eventualy creates a lot of pressure and will go out the breather and oil filler cap. Also if the breather is cloged up, it will also create presure and will do the same.. If the oil drain holes on the cylinder head are stoped up, the oil accuilates on top of the head and the movement of the rocker arms will splah it out through the filler cap. Oil capacity should be 5 Quarts of oil. If the oil level is ubove the full mark that could be the problem the crank shaft will splah the oil and could be causeing it to come out the filler cap. good luck
The head gasket was just replaced and you just added two quarts of oil? Did you look at the dip stick to see if the level was good? Too full? Did the oil gauge read ';0'; or jump up and down in pressure? The oil gauge doesn't tell you that your oil level is low. It tells you what the oil pressure is. Low pressure could mean a lot of things from a bad pump, worn bearings, or a few other things.

Leaking from the oil cap could just be a bad cap. Depending on the make, a V-6 can take 4 1/2 to 5 quarts.
First, use the dip stick to check oil levels. Sensor can be faulty so if the oil level is correct, start looking at having whatever sensor is at fault corrected. If you are loosing oil, have someone check it out.

By the way, it takes 5 to 6 quarts of oil, not 5/6 which is less than 1quart
The gauge at the dashboard is an engine oil pressure gauge to indicate the oil pressure when the engine is running. Low reading can be:

    No engine oil

    Lack of engine oil

    Faulty oil pressure switch

    Loosen/disconnected wiring

    Poor contact at wiring terminals

    Faulty oil pressure gauge

Oil leakage along the engine lubrication system

    Oil filter chocked
Yea, it is called a blown head gasket. Whoever replaced your head gaskets screwed up. Probably used the same bolts. Cheap garages do that all the time... and they always leak.
Check your dipstick for the level of oil.

It is not possible leaking from the cap.

Clean up the whole engine and recheck one more time.
it takes 5/6 quarts of oil

My 1990 Pontiac Sunbird is leaking oil around the gasket. Is my head gasket blown?

There is alot of oil buildup next to my head gasket. does that mean the head gasket is blown? 1990 pontiac sunbird. My 1990 Pontiac Sunbird is leaking oil around the gasket. Is my head gasket blown?
What you might do to find the ';real'; source of the leak is take the car to a wand-type car wash, lift the hood and clean the ever lasting hell out of the entire engine compartment. Now every-thing's is clean as a whistle and you can keep an eye on all mating gasket surfaces. Head gaskets if leaking, 99.9 % of the time leak coolant. If it continues to get wet *first where the cylinder head bolts to the block dip your little finger into the moisture when the motor is cold. Place it on your tongue. If it tastes sweet you have a coolant leak. Watch all other gaskets at the same time as oil likes to creep in all directions. Keep an eye on the valve lifter covers on the side of the block and the rocker arm cover on top.My 1990 Pontiac Sunbird is leaking oil around the gasket. Is my head gasket blown?
    Those Brazilian made engines are notorious for oil leaks. Power wash your engine and start with a new valve cover gasket. Fel-pro's are better thant he factory ones. When you remove your valve cover, clean the inside with oven cleaner. If your engine is full of sludge, start using a better oil in it!!! These engines cannot stand sludge build-up anywhere. Oil seals will leak if the oil pressure regulator becomes filled with sludge. Good luck!! You can get better power if you remove the stock plugs and install a set of Bosch Fusion or Platinum single points. Use Mobil One oil designed ';for use in GM cars';
is it a 4 cyl?if it is make sure its not coming from the rocker box(s) and running down. oil, dirty oil is not a sign of leaking, but seapage,or its not the source. the source will be clean not grimy, but moist and slick. if you dont wipe anything, youll see it plain as day.look for the clean spot grasshopper.
Hi , it would be better if you said what motor it is. 4 cly ones leak at the valve cover gasket a lot and that will run all over the motor, check it out , head gaskets leak water not oil,but valve covers will leak oil
Could be, but probably running down from valve cover gasket. Is engine running rough or overheating? If not unless oil is ';bubbling'; while engine running I doubt it.
You are probably seeing valve cover gasket leaking. jb

I'm trying to work on my 2 lawnmowers, craftsman eager-1 leaking oil, briggs & strat, pulley, where are manuals?

Sears has a parts look up on their website. You must know your model number to get any information. Not sure if Briggs has downloadable manuals for consumers or not. If you email me your model and serial number, (for your engine and mower) I might be able to get you information.I'm trying to work on my 2 lawnmowers, craftsman eager-1 leaking oil, briggs %26amp; strat, pulley, where are manuals?
Craftsman leaking oil. There are three reasons for leaking oil.

    1. Its over full

    2. Sump plate gasket is cracked

    3. Crankshaft oil ring needs to be replaced.

Now here's a short cut that I have used for some customers that could not afford to pay allot of money to get their mower fixed. If the leak is at the sump plate. Tip the mower to the opposite side slightly and prop it up it up with a board. Clean the area good with gasoline where it leaks on the seem. Get J%26amp;B Weld. Mix two poertions together and then apply it on the seem and let dry for three to four hours.. It will stop the oil from leaking and it works. I actually had a mower that threw a rod and cracked the case. I applied J %26amp; B Weld on the crack and used that block and made a used lawnmpwer for trimming around my house.

Next issue is the oil ring. There are two of them. One small around the dip stick and the other is around the crankshaft underneath the mower. Remove the blade and blade adapter. Clean the shaft with a soft sandpaper or brush. Take a small screw driver and stick it in the seal at a slant soide ways and and press it out. Replace it with a new one if it leaks only. When you put a new seal in slide it up with oil on the shaft and take a pvc pipe the same size diameter of the seal and and tap it in with a hammer and presto your done.

Next issue Briggs pulley's are not hard to fix. Tell me which model you have and I will give a step by step process to carefully to do it your self and save $$$$$

My Suzuki katana ay50 wont start and is leaking oil. can anybody help??

my katana ay50 is leaking oil and i cant get it to start. the battery has power because the horn works. i dont know why it wont start, anyone got any ideas??My Suzuki katana ay50 wont start and is leaking oil. can anybody help??
which oil %26amp; where is oil coming from? How much use has it had? have you tried a new plug? have you sufficient, correct fuel? tanks don't drain to dry, they stop draining with some still in.My Suzuki katana ay50 wont start and is leaking oil. can anybody help??
Does it try to turn over or do you just get that clicking noise? You need to check the oil level to make sure it hasn't lost too much oil. If ou have enough oil, then try to pop start it. Turn the key to the on position, put it in first, roll down a hill with the clutch in and when you build up about 2 to 5 miles an hour release the clutch and it should start. You may have to gas it a lil but not too much. Otherwise let a pro look at it.

  • I've recently had an oil change on my car and now there is a small leak why?

It only occurs when the vehicle is stationary and it is a very small patchI've recently had an oil change on my car and now there is a small leak why?
There could be a variety of reasons. The oil sump plug may not be tightened correctly allowing a leakage. The seal on the oil filter may be leaking or the actual filter itself is not properly installed. If the car is quite old, a lot of gunk can build up on the gaskets creating a false seal. When a new oil is added, particularly a fully synthetic to replace a semi or mineral oil, this gunk can be dislodged from the seals due to the cleaning action of the modern oil, thus exposing any leaks.

To locate its origin, park the car on a level surface overnight and place newspaper underneath the engine making sure it is secured in place. The oil spot should show up by the next morning allowing you to see where it is coming from. You will need to get under the car to have a look.

Alternatively bring it back to the garage that did the oil change and ask them to have a look at it for you.

If its just a small drip (a few drops over a period of hours or days) then its nothing to worry about but obviously if you are having to top up with oil every few days and there's an oil slick on your driveway every morning then you will need to take action.

    Best of luck.

DamoI've recently had an oil change on my car and now there is a small leak why?
I'd check to see where the leak is coming from. If it's the drain plug, tighten it before it falls out and blows up the motor. If the oil looks to be coming from the oil filter, it may be that the high school drop out that changed your oil forgot to make sure the old oil filter o-ring was not stuck to the oil filter flange surface. If that's the case oil will leak a little for a day and then suddenly all the oil blows out of the motor leaving you stranded.
First you need to identify where the leak is coming from. Its most likely the sump plug on the bottom of the sump tank under the car. Take a cloth and throughly clean the sump plug (nut) and then wait to see if oil builds up there again. If it does, and it most likely will, this is where the issue lies. The garage should have replaced this plug and the gaskget underneath if they were working in accordance with the maintenance manual. You dont want to try and replace this youself because you are going to end up losing the oil that you have just paid the garage for! So take it back and make them replace this and top up the oil.
they may have spilt a little oil on the engine whilst filling it,it may disappear in a day or 2...its also possible the brass/copper sump gasket needs replaced...it is advised to change it during an oil change[there penny's]but some mechanics dont..
The sump plug has not been tightened properly or they have forgotten to put the gasket/washer back.

Take your car to whoever did the oil change and they will fix it.

Either that of the new filter is not on tight enough to seal it.
cos they didn't re-tighten the nut on the oil tank enough when they drained the tank

take it back and get them to nip it.

As you say, its only a small leak, so why would you notice it traveling?
might be they didnt tighten your oilpan plug tight enough, its free to take it back and have them check it out. go in the shop with them so you can see for your self where the leak is!!!
