98 Camry leaking oil and my check engine light comes on?

The oil leak is a problem that no one can find the answer too yet it is all over my driveway(and yes it is oil), and my check engine light comes on for no reason that anyone can find. (They tell me that my gas cap is not tight enough) I have taken it to a few dealerships in my area. Someone, anyone any Ideas???98 Camry leaking oil and my check engine light comes on?
Shoot it. Toyotas have no soul. (Just kidding). Has anyone degreased and thoroughly cleaned the underneath and engine to see where the oil is actually coming from? Sounds like you need a good mechanic! (But you already know that). 1. Clean and degrease the engine including underneath. (You can do this yourself with a high pressure washer and degreaser however stay clear of the spark plug leads and other electrics as it may not start when you have finished). 2 Put a large piece of cardboard under the car and wait. 3 check where the oil lands. 4 get under the car (Please use ramps or proper stands, I have witnessed a person get crushed, not pretty). Look up from where the oil is landing. See if you can identify the source. If you can mark it (white paint on a small brush will do). If its simple you may be able to fix it yourself. If not you can go to the mechanic (or 2 or 3) and get an accurate estimate to do the repair. Now that you know the location of the leak you may not know how to fix it but you are less likely to get ripped off. Oil leaks should not be a fact of life on a car as new as 98. Could be anything from a seal to a sump gasket, sump plug O ring (probably copper) oil filter not tight enough or seal leaking, rocker (tappet) cover gasket or any number of other gaskets. Could also be gearbox related or coming from the driveshafts. Did it start slowly? is it getting worse? how long has it been leaking? how much oil are you losing? These are all questions any decent mechanic should ask before he starts charging. For any mechanic to tell you he cant find the leak is crap. He isn't looking hard enough. Go to a decent private mechanic who doesnt mind getting dirty. In regard to the Engine check light it is probably a sensor. You need to plug it in and get an error code.. That should tell you what the alleged cause is. Unfortunately you will probably have to go to a dealer to plug it in unless you know of an independant mechanic with the gear. check engine is on because you are low on oil
Well Oil Leaks are normal wear and tear that will need attention sooner...(replacing gaskets) that are failing..._sometimes all a leak needs is to be tightened up...and they will stop for a while...





As for the Check Engine, this might be a failing o2 sensor, you need to get to a trusted mechanic and have them look into it for a day...make sure they OBDII (On Board Diagnostic test) the Camry and get back to you with any news so that you can decide what to do...

I presume you had the following checked. Valve cover/oil pan gasket. Have you /they checked to see if you have a crack in the engine block or not. Also what about a bad oil sending unit.





If your gas cap was not on there tight enough. Your check engine light should come on.
Oil leaks are a problem so you should probably fix that. Clean up your engine and then just follow the trail of oil to the leak.





Gas caps can also set off the check engine light if the gasket is bad or its just not on tight. Replace your gas cap its 10 years old and probably bad.
More than likely,the oil leak probably has nothing to do with the check engine light.The check engine light indicates a problem with the emmisions system.About 90% of check engine lights is because one of the oxygen sensors malfunctioning.The only way to know for sure is to take it to the garage to have the car's computer scanned.They'll tell u which one is bad or what is wrong.sometimes it's more than one thing.As for the leak,it's probably the drain plug gasket,the valve cover gaskets,the oil pan gasket,the oil seals around the crankshaft/and/or camshafts,or even the head gasket.The heads have oil ports in them so the valves get oil,and if it's leaking around where the oil ports are,it will leak oil.Have the engine oil dye-tested.They put this fye in the oil and it tells them exactly where it's leaking.Hope this helps.lata
The oil leak can be from the engine or transmission. Check levels of oils regularly and see which one is depleting unduly. If the levels remain steady, then its just some leak due to the age of the car. Just ensure you donot drive on levels which may damage your engine/transmission.





'Check Engine' light is best left to the diagonostic people who can advise you correctly.
Tape up some newspapers %26amp; lay the whole sheet under the car next morning u can take a look %26amp; have a good idea what are the leak is coming from, if its only a small leak you can pour an additive in the oil that should block the leak for a while.
