Hi i have vw t4 it has done over 200.000 miles but still runs fine but there is a tapping noise quiet loud noticable at traffic lights and generaly ticking over can this be sorted out easily ?? and also there is oil coming out of a fly wheel on the drivers side behind the front wheel is this a big job to do or just a seal it seems to have happened when it was over filled by a mechanic and has been like it for several months I have spent alot of money on keeping this van on the road so it would be nice to be armed with some info and cost before going to garage thanks in advance for any help.Vw transporter 1998 2.4 d tapping noise and oil leak?
The tapping sounds like engine knock. Knocking is where your engine pre-ignites the gasoline mist in the chamber before its actually time to ignite the mist. This ruin valves and the like. Knocking can be 'band-aided' sometimes by running a higher quality fuel. Next time you fill up try using a higher octane fuel than you usually do. On the mark III VW engine's the fly wheel is quite a way down, so fixing part of the fly wheel is a big job.
