I have a 97 grand am and it leaks oil due to high pressure in the engine does not leak when oil cap is off?

the pressure in the engine causes for the oil to leak through the dip stick that is not broken when oil cap is off it does not leak. the leak if mostly air trying to get out and taking oils that covers the area. the people from the part store tell me to check the PCV valve but my car does not have that. what is another part that functions like the pvc valveI have a 97 grand am and it leaks oil due to high pressure in the engine does not leak when oil cap is off?
Midas_darin is corect about the 3.1 L PCV valve, but if you have the more common 2.4 L 4 cylinder engine you don't have a typical PCV valve, you have a air/oil separator it is a black box anchor by two 10mm bolts on the top left of you intake manifold.

it has two rubber hoses 1 to the intake the other goes straight down to black box bolted to the side of the engine just above the oil pan.

i have seen them completely clogged and pop(messy)

They are a pain to replace and if you have never had to replace to two rubber hoses you are going to have to now(never seen the hoses last more than 5 years)

this option is by far the cheapest and most likely cause.

Have a train mechanic change it .

Off the top of my head the separator is about $65 and labor should be no more than 1 hour to 1.5 hour X the shops hourly rate. hoses not to sure ($30 both (guestimate)).I have a 97 grand am and it leaks oil due to high pressure in the engine does not leak when oil cap is off?
As far as I know, a PCV is a PCV. I don't think they have changed the name of it. It will be located in a approximately 5/8 '; hose and is usually on top back of the engine.

PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation, which means that the smoke from the oil, in the crankcase will be vented up and back into the cylinders for burning. Used to be that every car had white smoke (fumes) spewing from under the engine from the hot oil. This caused a lot of polution so they designed a path for the smoke (fumes) to be burned. The PCV vavle will open at idle and allow the smoke to be sucked back to be burned.

If the PCV valve is stuck closed the pressure in the crankcase has no where to go and will build up blowing the oil out.

Next question is obvious: Do you have TOO much oil in the engine? This will cause oil to blow out somewhere. Find a car like yours and compare your oil dip stick to theirs. Yours may have been replaced with one too short and you are putting too much oil in your engine.

You may have a lot of ';blow by';. This means that the compression is leaking down past the rings and entering the oil pan which may be creating a lot of pressure and blowing oil up and out the oil stick holder.

Ask a good mechanic IF you have one and where it is.

Good luck. Pops
I find it hard to believe that your car does not have a PCV valve.

If not it must have some sort of other engine breather system that is evidently plugged up. Go to your local Autozone store they'll not only sell you want you need but also show you where it is
Yes, it is the PCV valve. Is located on right side of engine, under a module that kind of looks circular, and with wires to it. Is able to be taken off by twisting it to the left, then pulling up. Then under there is the PCV valve. Good luck.
If you have a '97 grand am with a 3.1 V6 engine, the PCV valve is on top of the engine. As you stand facing the car, the PCV valve will be in the valve cover closest to you. It will be on the right hand side. There will be a rubber hose with a 90 degree bend in it that goes to a plastic tube. Lift up on the rubber hose CAREFULLY. The PCV valve will either stay in the valve cover or it may come out with the hose. Shake it. If you hear a rattle, it is good (although I would still replace it). If you don't hear a rattle, it is junk.
your car has a PVC valve check it if you take it out check to see if it rattles if it Doe's it is fine. you have got a blow by problemm you proble need a rebuild. hope the PVC valve take care of the problem
97 is on the left side in the valve cover replace it 4 the few bucks its worth if u still have a problem u may need rings
put a new pcv valve on it, your car has one! it's on the valve cover and has a hose or a metal line coming from it.
is the engine at 2.5 or 2.7 if so look under the main intake it would be by the firewall...
